Approaching the event horizon: 1.3mmλ VLBI of SgrA*

چکیده

Advances in VLBI instrumentation now allow wideband recording that significantly increases the sensitivity of short wavelength VLBI observations. Observations of the supermassive black hole candidate at the center of the Milky Way, SgrA*, with short wavelength VLBI reduces the scattering effects of the intervening interstellar medium, allowing observations with angular resolution comparable to the apparent size of the event horizon of the putative black hole. Observations in April 2007 at a wavelength of 1.3mm on a three station VLBI array have now confirmed structure in SgrA* on scales of just a few Schwarzschild radii. When modeled as a circular Gaussian, the fitted diameter of SgrA* is 37μas (+16,−10; 3σ), which is smaller than the expected apparent size of the event horizon of the Galactic Center black hole. These observations demonstrate that mm/sub-mm VLBI is poised to open a new window onto the study of black hole physics via high angular resolution observations of the Galactic Center.

An Approach Detecting the Event Horizon of SgrA*

Imaging the vicinity of black hole is one of the ultimate goals of VLBI astronomy. The closest massive black hole, SgrA*, located at Galactic center is the leading candidate for such observations. Combined with recent VLBI recording technique and sub-mm radio engineering, we now have the sufficient sensitivity for the observations. We here show performance simulations of sub-mm VLBI arrays for ...

Reconstructing Video from Interferometric Measurements of Time-Varying Sources

Very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) makes it possible to recover images of astronomical sources with extremely high angular resolution. Most recently, the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) has extended VLBI to short millimeter wavelengths with a goal of achieving angular resolution sufficient for imaging the event horizons of nearby supermassive black holes. VLBI provides measurements related ...

Zooming towards the Event Horizon - mm-VLBI today and tomorrow

Global VLBI imaging at millimeter and sub-millimeter wavelengths overcomes the opacity barrier of synchrotron self-absorption in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and opens the direct view into sub-pc scale regions not accessible before. Since AGN variability is more pronounced at short millimeter wavelength, mm-VLBI can reveal structural changes in very early stages after outbursts. When combined w...

High Resolution Celestial Imaging: An Algorithm and Dataset for VLBI Image Reconstruction

Recently, there has been an international effort to create an Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) capable of imaging a black hole’s event horizon for the first time. Imaging distant celestial sources, such as the event horizon of a black hole, with high resolving power (i.e. small angular resolution) requires telescopes with prohibitively large diameters due to the inverse relationship between angula...
